Baby Born With Severe Deformity Undergoes 18 Surgeries That Transforms Her Life
Life seems unfair sometimes and we do not really understand why. Many of us have experienced so many trials in our lives that have taught us a lot of things but Cody Hall have been through so much that not many of us have ever experienced before. Cody was born with severe facial deformity. The doctors believe this to be ‘haemangioma.’ Her haemangioma was so huge that it distorted the left side of her face. Her doctors told her family that there was nothing that can be done to treat her condition until she reaches 6 years old.
Cody is now 25 and she is living in Northamptonshire, England. Her condition changed a lot in her life. She is happily married! And it happened just recently. It was not an easy road for her but what she did not expect is for her to lead this to a ‘happy ending.’ Cody’s life would not have ended this way if not for her parents who never stopped looking for a treatment for their daughter even though they were constantly discouraged by different doctors from the United Kingdom that there was nothing that could be done to help her condition.
Infantile haemangiomas or also called ‘haemangiomas’ are benign vascular lesions. They appear during the first weeks of the baby’s life. This may look like blue or pink macules or patches. These enter a proliferative phase and will become elevated and will surround the skin surfaces. These patches makes haemangiomas distinct from other vascular lesions. The growth usually complete when the baby reaches 9 months where 80% of the growth occurs by the fourth month. This means that its evolution takes place at a rate of 10% every year.
Cody’s parents found a surgeon in the United States who is an expert in operating on children that have severe facial deformities like the one that Cody has. Her family launched an appeal where they were able to raise over $303,462. This is why Cody was sent to Roosevelt Hospital in New York for her first treatment in 1993 when she was just one year old. After this, Cody then had 18 more operations in the span of 14 years.
The procedures done on Cody included facelifts, rhinoplasty, liposuction, skin grafts, dermabrasion, and also eye surgery. Cody recalled, “When I started at secondary school I did get a lot of people asking questions and in the street, there would be people staring. Over the years people have realized I am who I am.”
Through her procedures, Cody met a man that would change her life forever. This is now her husband, Lewis. The two were engaged earlier this year and just tied the knot last week! According to Cody, their wedding was a very emotional day for both families and tears were shed especially when she saw Lewis at the altar. She said, “Only tears of joy. I just want to show people that there is a happy ending.”
Regardless of what she was going through, Cody remained positive. She knew that these trials would not be an easy feat but she never gave up. She never knew that in time, she will meet the man of her dreams. Her family never lost hope and made sure she lives a happy life. For Cody, dreams do become a reality.
