Vanilla, a chimpanzee, experienced the joy of seeing the sky for the first time after being confined in cages for nearly three decades. A poignant video, shared by the charity Save The Chimps, captures the heartwarming moment when Vanilla steps out into the open and looks at the sky, clearly overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and freedom.

Vanilla’s early life was spent imprisoned in a small cage at New York’s Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP), a facility known for its notoriety. In 1995, she was rescued and relocated to Wildlife Waystation. However, even at the Waystation, her enclosure had a caged roof, preventing her from seeing the sky.

The life-altering moment for Vanilla arrived when Save The Chimps stepped in to rescue her once again. In the video, Vanilla can be seen hesitantly emerging from her enclosure along with her chimp companions Shake, Magic, Jeff, and Ernesta. Initially nervous, Vanilla finds encouragement from the alpha of the group, Dwight, who beckons her to step out. In an endearing moment, Vanilla jumps into Dwight’s arms.

As she comes to terms with her new surroundings, she looks up and witnesses the sky for the very first time. Her reaction is priceless – her eyes widen, and she opens her mouth, visibly astounded and captivated by the expanse and beauty of the sky.

Vanilla’s journey from confinement to freedom is emblematic of the resilience and capacity for wonder inherent in these intelligent primates. Currently, Vanilla and her chimpanzee family are residents of Air Force Island, under the care of Save The Chimps. They now have a three-acre island to explore, free from the constraints of cages. What’s more, they have the autonomy to choose how and where they wish to spend their days.
