Dentists Say That This Dangerous Trend Is Making Teens’ Teeth Worse
TikTok users worldwide are resorting to extreme measures in order to garner more views than the others on the platform. Some are even taking the TikTok trends to an unhealthy extreme just to be in the loop of what’s hot online.
One of the most popular these days is filing down their teeth in an attempt to create that “PERFECT SMILE.”
Even if most TikTok users think that their teeth will look better after this DIY procedure, dentists have a grim warning for the young people who are following this trend. Dentists say that if they don’t stop harming their teeth, they might need false teeth or dentures by the time they are in their forties.
Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri, a London-based dentist shared an opinion regarding this trend. The doctor said, “She’s going to have dentures by the age of 40.”
When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, some people will go to any lengths to achieve their desired appearance, even having a substantial tooth structure filed away in order to accommodate veneers. However, veneers only last around ten to fifteen years before they need to be replaced. And full-coverage crowns need more work to get ready for any cosmetic dentistry procedure. This means filing down the teeth to make room for the crown is not going to make this possible.
Dr. Emi Mawson of Cornwall’s Dental Practice advised her TikTok followers about the increasing number of “veneer” videos on the platform. The doctor said, “These are not veneer preparations. These are crown preparations, and there’s a big difference.”
However, these influencers do not appear to care much about the physical or mental well-being of the people who follow them. They are only concerned with gaining attention and money at the expense of others, no matter what it takes.
Dentists are speaking out now because young people are going through these invasive dental treatments without even comprehending what they are doing or why they should think about it first. According to these dentists, they are concerned that this could have long-term consequences for their patient’s oral health.
It is essential for patients to have a solid understanding of the distinctions between veneers and crowns, as this may assist them in avoiding inflicting more permanent harm to their teeth. Crowns and veneers are two distinct dental operations, despite the fact that they are phrases that can be used interchangeably with one another.
When it comes to providing information to their followers on TikTok, unfortunately, it would appear that accuracy is not a priority for the influencers on the platform.
Dr. Zainab Mackie, a Detroit-based dentist, said, “When you get veneers, most of your tooth is still there, only a little bit is shaved off. When you get crowns, your teeth are shaved down to little pegs.”
Wafer-thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain cover veneers. They change the color, shape, size, or length of front teeth. Before having a crown, a tooth must be thoroughly prepared. Several millimeters of dental enamel must be removed irreversibly. Dr. Mackie said, “This is only done if there were cavities to take out or the teeth were already broken.”
Dr. Ben Winters said, “That’s gonna be like $20,000 every ten years, not to mention when you get a cavity.”
So if you don’t want to get into any of these situations, don’t always believe what you see on TikTok.
