Eliza Hutton Opens Up About Fiancé Brandon Lee’s Death Following The ‘Rust’ Accident
The entertainment industry was shaken up after a freak accident happened in the ‘Rust’ movie set. The accident led to the death of Halyna Hutchins. Sadly, Eliza Hutton is too familiar with such situations
In 1993, Eliza was engaged to actor Brandon Lee, the son of action star Bruce Lee. The actor tragically lost his life on the set of ‘The Crow.’ Brandon died when he was shot by another actor with a prop gun that was supposed to contain only blanks. But later on, it was revealed that Brandon was shot with a .44 caliber bullet that entered his abdomen and got lodged in his spine. This led to his death.
Following the news of Halyna Hutchins’ death, Eliza shared a photo on Instagram of herself and Brandon with the caption:
“there’s no such thing as a prop gun.”
During an interview with People, Eliza finally broke her silence on Brandon’s death that happened 28 years ago. She shared, “Twenty-eight years ago, I was shattered by the shock and grief of losing the love of my life, Brandon Lee, so senselessly. My heart aches again now for Halyna Hutchins’ husband and son, and for all those left in the wake of this avoidable tragedy.” She adds, “I urge those in positions to make a change to consider alternatives to real guns on sets.”
Eliza isn’t the only one affected by the current incident. Brandon’s sister, Shannon Lee, also spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her own experience. She shared, “I have been in contact with my mom and with my brother’s fiancee. A lot of people have been reaching [out]. It’s stirring up a lot of emotions — and frustration. There are rules that are supposed to be followed.”
Shannon adds, “I am certainly not pointing fingers at anyone because that would be the wrong thing to do. But, there is no reason for something like this to happen. My heart goes out to Alec Baldwin. I feel for the work he is going to have to do to process this and try to find some measure of peace around it. And even more so for the family of Halyna Hutchins. It’s having your whole world flip upside down. There should be compassion for all the pain everyone is going through.”
Shannon also shared that both she and Eliza believe that there’s no reason to use real weapons these days. She said, “I think that in this day and age with all the special effects that are possible and all of the technology, there is no reason to have a prop gun or a gun on a set that can fire a projectile of any sort. It is not necessary, and I would love to see some changes made industry-wide. My brother’s fiancee and I have been talking about it. I think we wish we had thought to do more 28 years ago, and we would love to do that now.”
Currently, the investigations into the Rust incident are ongoing. The Santa Fe County District Attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, explained to CNN that whether or not charges are filed will basically depend on determining how the live rounds made their way into the prop gun that was used on set that day.
