Foal Dies Then Mama Horse Adopts Orphan With All Her Heart
Animals feel the loss of their child too. That is why when Queen Uniek, a Friesian breed horse in the Netherlands lost her newborn foal, her owner knew that she needed to do something that can help heal her broken heart.
Everyone was anxiously waiting as Queen Uniek was going through labor for the birth of her first foal. She seemed to have known that something was wrong while she was giving birth. Her owner could sense that she was scared. The horse would run around her stable and could not settle.
Yvonne, her owner, made sure to stay by her side. This was going to be a difficult experience for Queen Uniek. She tried to calm the horse down. They knew that she would have a hard time since this is her first foal, but they did not expect that something worse was going to happen.
Uniek finally had her foal after approximately an hour of labor. When veterinarians brought the foal out for an examination, Yvonne received sad news – it was already dead. They tried everything to revive the foal but nothing else could be done.
Because of what had happened, everyone—but Yvonne in particular—knew that Uniek would need all the love and support she could get right now. Once she realized what happened to her foal, Yvonne knew that the horse would be sad and depressed.
While everyone else left, Yvonne stayed to console Uniek. The mother horse kept kissing her lifeless foal, probably hoping that it would breathe again. But Yvonne knew that sooner or later, Uniek would know what happened.
Yvonne was extremely worried for Uniek. Thankfully, the team at Friesian Horses didn’t have to wait long for some wonderful news.
Yvonne’s friend just informed her that they are taking care of an orphaned foal and could use any help that Uniek might provide. Although Yvonne was initially concerned about Uniek’s reaction to the new foal, she eventually came to the realization that this would be good for Uniek.
As soon as the orphaned foal was driven to their property, Yvonne and her staff didn’t know what to expect. They wondered if Uniek would even show interest in adopting the foal when she just lost her own. Many anxious people were waiting in the barn hoping for the best.
Yvonne brought the foal cautiously closer to her as Uniek approached. She knew that Uniek will be gradually introduced to the orphaned foal just so they can gauge how this mother horse would react around someone else’s baby.
The first few exchanges were very tense. Then Uniek and the little horse took turns smelling each other. The mother horse then broke into a little dance as if letting everyone know that she is happy and excited at finally meeting the foal was palpable.
Yvonne said, “It was a very special moment. I never thought this would happen. We knew instantly that Queen Uniek accepted Rising Star.”
Queen Uniek has stayed by the foals’ side ever since she first met Rising Star. After taking in the foal as her own, Uniek became quite protective of it. One time, Yvonne found Uniek and the foal together in the stable.
Seeing this, Yvonne and the rest of the crew were relieved to see that the mother horse openly accepted the orphaned foal without any problem.
