High School Students Surprise Their Classmates With Down Syndrome By Making Them Prom King And Queen

One of the most awaited events for high schoolers is prom night. This is a special night where girls get to wear their most beautiful dresses and wear a bit of make-up and a pair of heels maybe, while boys get to wear their most formal attire and impress the girl at the party. Prom is a pretty big deal for these teenagers.

And during Prom, one of the things that the students are looking forward to is who is going to be the Prom King and Queen.

That’s something that we surely got excited about when we were in high school. But do you think it’s the same experience for those who were born special? Like kids born with down syndrome? Do they get excited for Prom night too?

High school students Zane Wales and Anna Anderson both have down syndrome. And take note, like other teens, they have a love life too. In fact, these two have been dating since middle school.

And like other students at Jefferson Forest High School, Zane and Anna were attending the Prom night too. But little did they know that this prom would be a little bit different than most proms are.

What these two didn’t know was that the other students, basically their classmates, had something special in store for Zane and Anna. In fact, the plans were so grand that some teachers knew about it too.

As it turned out, their classmates wanted to make Zane their prom king and Anna their prom queen!

Their goal was for Zane and Anna to feel that they belong. That despite the fact that they are different from their peers, they would receive the same experience. They wanted Zane and Anna to feel accommodated especially during this special night.

Children born with Down Syndrome are rare. In fact, only 1 in 1,000 kids have this condition. That’s why people like Zane and Anna live their whole lives knowing that they’re different from everybody else. And they’ve accepted that. But their friends at school will not let them feel that they’re left out. They wanted Zane and Anna to feel like they fit in, and that they were always welcome in their company.

The students have planned for weeks to put this plan into action. Heather Hevener, one of the teachers, said, “They see these kids every day. They walk the same halls with these same kids, and they just feel like they’re part of them, so they wanted to make sure that they also really felt part of them.”

And when the big day came, everyone was excited to give Zane and Anna the ultimate surprise. The student at the top of the stairs then announced…

“You’re our prom king, Zane!”

“And here comes the prom queen, as chosen by the whole school: Anna!”

Both Zane and Anna couldn’t hide their excitement. They are both smiling from ear to ear, loving the moment that they never expected to happen. Zane and Anna were still smiling even after their prom coronation. The gesture surely touched them, and feeling that they belong with their peers seemed like it really meant a lot to them.

This was definitely a prom night to remember, for all the right reasons.
