How To Keep Strawberries Fresh For Weeks In The Fridge
When berries are in season, there is no doubt that you will get a bag or two and store them in your fridge. Those red, juicy berries are so irresistible that it would be too difficult not to get tempted to add them to your cart. But if you end up with so many of them once you get home, you might find yourself in a predicament about what to do with all of them.
Now, you find yourself searching Google for the best ways to store them and make them last longer in your fridge. You start thinking about all the things you could make with the strawberries that you added to your cart.
You could make a strawberry pie or maybe a homemade jam for your kids. A strawberry cheesecake also sounds good. And if you love having fruits in the morning, you can also just eat them or add them to your bowl of oatmeal. When it comes to fresh berries, you have endless options to consider. But do you have the time to do all these?
Let me ask you after you get home with a bag full of berries, what do you do? Do you wash and stuff them all in your fridge? How long do you think will they last in there?
Unfortunately, you know too well that stuffing them in your fridge doesn’t really make them last longer. It will not take long for the strawberries to get moldy. Then sooner or later, after your busy day at work, you will forget about them. And sadly, most of them will end up in your garbage bin.
But not anymore!
One mom recently shared her hack for keeping strawberries fresh in the fridge for weeks. Yes, you read it right, weeks!
What’s good about the hack is that it requires very little effort, very little time, and very little ingredients. Might sound too good to be true, but according to this mom, this hack really works. It’s perfect for those who do not have all the time in the world to do complicated recipes to store their berries.
According to this mom, all you need is a bowl, water, and white vinegar.
Make a concoction of one part vinegar to five parts water in a bowl. Add the strawberries to the bowl and soak for a few minutes.
The vinegar removes the bacteria or mold spores which causes the strawberries to go bad quickly. Then rinse the fruits in tap water. Do not be surprised that you will see some dirt or something gross in the vinegar mixture after soaking the berries. Once the strawberries are removed, make sure you dry them as thoroughly as you can. Remember that the dampness might cause them to become susceptible to mold again. You can also try to put them in a salad spinner to dry them off, or better yet, pat them with a paper towel.
Once dry, don’t put them back in the container that they came with from the grocery store. Better place the dry strawberries on top of a paper towel and keep them in the fridge.
By doing this trick, you will be shocked at how long they stay that sweet and very red in color!
