Parking Lot Transforms At Night Becoming A Shelter For The Homeless
Beddown’s founder saw an opportunity to help others using the empty parking lot. They converted it into a shelter for the homeless.
For the longest time, homelessness has been a major issue. People lose their homes for a variety of reasons, but circumstances beyond their control are frequently a significant factor. Some of them can no longer afford life’s luxuries. In order to survive on the streets, homeless people will sleep wherever they can find a place, even if it is dangerous.
Norman McGillivray founded “Beddown,” an Australian non-profit.
He realized that there is so much unused space at night that it could be used to shelter the homeless. In order to test the program in Brisbane, the organization approached ‘Secure Parking’ and managed to secure a two-week trial period. Volunteers got to work preparing the vacant parking lot for the homeless once the necessary paperwork and approvals were in order.
The goal of Beddown is to find unused spaces and turn them into shelters for the city’s homeless population. They are the ones that need a place to sleep at night. Without enough sleep, they can get sick. Depression, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and memory loss can all result from sleep deprivation.
Also, these days, attacks and robberies are common, even with the homeless. And while they stay in the streets at night, they become more at risk of these dangers.
In addition to providing a variety of services to the homeless, Beddown also offered access to medical professionals, nurses, dentists, and even hairdressers. Afterward, the needy were provided with brand new outfits. They were also provided with a place to wash and freshen up if they needed to do so. After that, Beddown provided them with access to a range of social support services and resources.
On Instagram, Beddown posted a picture of their wonderful project. They wrote: “Our ultimate goal is to provide a great night’s sleep for the homeless by getting as close as we can to a proper comfortable bed.” Our homeless population suffers from sleep deprivation, and we believe that providing them with a safe, secure, and comfortable place to sleep will have a significant impact.”
As evidenced by a large number of attendees and positive reviews, it appears that Beddown will continue to transform vacant lots into temporary shelters. Over the course of two weeks, 41 visitors came through the door.
And the project’s most important aspect was that all guests felt safe and secure during their stay. Sleep and the beds were rated by their guests 4.5 out of 5. Even the youngest member of the project, a 15-year-old, tried to get into Beddown too.
It’s a fantastic effort by Beddown. Hopefully, many more businesses and organizations will follow suit. Not necessarily in the same way, but rather with another initiative aimed at bettering the lot of the world’s homeless population.
According to a study conducted solely in the United States, a total of 552,830 people were homeless on a single night in 2018. Those numbers may have risen as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns. More people have lost their jobs and as a result, lost their homes too.
This is the best time to offer them help. So let’s lend a hand whenever possible.
