Patrick Swayze’s Widow Honors Her ‘Hero’
In a recent interview with Independent Journal Review, Lisa Niemi, the widow of late actor Patrick Swayze, opened up about her life, marriage, and the enduring legacy of her husband, who passed away in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Niemi and Swayze were married for 34 years and had been together since they were teenagers. Both talented artists, they shared a love for dancing, acting, and filmmaking. In the interview, Niemi revealed that Swayze was not only her partner in life but also her hero.
“He was an extraordinary man, an incredible husband, and the love of my life,” Niemi shared. She went on to praise her late husband’s dedication, passion, and talent, which she believes contributed to his success as an actor, dancer, and filmmaker. Niemi described Swayze as a humble and kind person who was always willing to help others.
Swayze’s talent was widely recognized, with a career spanning over 30 years and numerous awards, including three Golden Globe nominations. He starred in many iconic films, such as “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost,” and “Road House.” Despite his successful career, Swayze always remained grounded and focused on his craft, according to Niemi.
In the interview, Niemi recounted some of the challenges they faced as a couple, including her husband’s struggle with alcoholism. However, she emphasized that the love and support they provided each other helped them overcome these obstacles. Niemi shared that she was proud of Swayze for his continued commitment to his sobriety and for seeking treatment to overcome his addiction.
Niemi also discussed Swayze’s battle with pancreatic cancer, which he was diagnosed with in January 2008. She recalled the shock and disbelief they experienced upon learning about the diagnosis, as well as their determination to fight the disease together. Throughout his battle with cancer, Swayze remained strong and courageous, continuing to work on film and television projects even as his health declined.
Swayze’s passing in September 2009 left a significant void in Niemi’s life, but she has continued to honor his memory and the love they shared. In 2011, she published a memoir, “Worth Fighting For,” which documents their life together and the challenges they faced as a couple. Niemi also established the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund at the Stanford Cancer Institute in memory of her husband, to support research and raise awareness about the disease.
Niemi admitted that moving forward after Swayze’s death was not easy, but she has found new love and purpose in her life. She remarried in 2014 to Albert DePrisco, a jeweler, and remains dedicated to preserving Swayze’s legacy.
As the interview concluded, Niemi expressed her gratitude for the love and support she has received from fans and the public throughout the years. She also emphasized the importance of cherishing the time we have with our loved ones, as life is fragile and unpredictable.
In her words, “You never know what tomorrow will bring, so make the most of today and hold your loved ones close. Love is the most important thing in life, and it’s the one thing that remains long after we’re gone.”
Through her continued efforts to honor her late husband’s memory and raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, Lisa Niemi demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.
