radio host delivers emotional tribute to his daughter

On Tuesday morning, Bo Thompson put on his headphones and returned to his usual morning show on WBT radio after being away for two weeks. It was a tough day for him as a dad because he talked about his daughter, Janey, who passed away on April 9 due to problems from a blood clot. Janey was only 20 years old.

“Janey would want me to keep doing my job,” Bo said on the show. “From now on, I’m going to live in a way that I think she would want me to and that would make her proud.”Janey Thompson was a second-year biophysics student at Wake Forest University, and she had excellent grades. She graduated in 2022 from Myers Park High School, where her dad also went in the early 1990s. Janey was very active in school, playing the clarinet in the wind ensemble and jazz band. She also played softball and basketball and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2022.Bo Thompson has been hosting the morning show at Charlotte’s well-known conservative radio station, WBT, since 2012. He has always wanted this job since he interned at the station when he was 16. Bo is known for focusing on his guests and often talks about his hopes for a better future for Charlotte. In his show on Tuesday, it was clear that Bo was reflecting on his memories of Janey. He remembered how Janey liked to describe people as “super nice.” Although Bo used to remind her that not everyone is nice, he now realizes that there are many kind and good people in the world, and we should appreciate and focus on them.Bo decided to return to work on Tuesday after seeing his son go back to school on Monday. He thought if his son could do it, he could too.During his show, Bo played music that reminded him of Janey, including songs from her Spotify playlist. He played “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder, which reminded him of her third birthday party, and “Bright” by Echosmith, which Janey performed at a school talent show when she was in fifth grade. Bo was amazed by her performance then.At the end of his show, Bo thanked everyone who had been kind to his family during this difficult time, from his coworkers to the paramedics. As he wrapped up, he played the song “Bright” by Echosmith, and with deep emotion, he said his final words for the show, “I love my Janey bug.”
