See How This Man Transforms Desert Cave Into A Gorgeous 5,700 Sq Ft Home
Can you imagine a person born in this modern era be living in a cave? A prehistoric ‘caveman’ might, but would you give it a try? And what would a home inside a cave look like? Believe it or not, a cave can actually be transformed into a home and a perfect one even for modern times.
Grant Johnson lives in a cave. Yes, you read it right. But he’s not a literal caveman. His off-the-grid desert home is over 5,000 square feet and once you see it, you will be surely impressed by its craftsmanship. It’s not your ordinary cave home. It’s complete with everything that you can find in a modern home, including a music studio.
Johnson moved to Moab for school at 17. While getting his education, he also got involved n hiking. He worked in the town’s mines when he has no class. Then it didn’t take long for him to appreciate nature to town life. He was in his 20s when Johnson moved to Utah.
He decided to try an off-the-grid lifestyle. He found a spot in the canyons to irrigate and grow his own food. He bought a large piece of land where he was allowed to develop it to his liking.
At first, he doubted his ability to make all this happen. He didn’t know how he could bring the materials together and make the space livable. Despite his doubts, he went for it. The process to create a home in this cave was not easy. It took him 20 years to finish. He didn’t just need minor equipment to make this happen, but he also needed dynamite!
He shared, “I started blasting in 95, blasted a little tunnel here first. From the first blast I was committed, and then it was like eight winters probably of blasting.”
When he was done blasting, his next problem was how he can create a livable home out of this. The property sat unused for a few years while he decided what he wanted to make of it. He also saved up money to make this happen.
He said, “I didn’t know what I wanted. You know, how I wanted to finish it.” But eventually, he finished the project. Johnson managed to blast holes for windows and reinforced them with steel. He then adds glass to create windows with an epic view. He even found a way to provide it with running water and electricity.
Now, he allows tourists to rent a private room inside the compound on Airbnb. And those who were lucky to be given the chance to stay in his modern cave home are sharing their positive experience.
One renter shared: “There is nowhere on Earth quite like the Boulder house. It is one of the wonders of the modern world – a fully functional, modernized house carved into a giant Boulder. The drive across the stream to get to it was harmless, but thrilling. The horses and cows surrounding the place were charming, and the views in every direction were magnificent. Don’t miss your chance to stay here!”
Twenty years after he took the leap to turn this dream into a reality, the barren land is now beautiful and sustainable. Johnson loves his home and his off-grid lifestyle.
