Senior takes his 92-year-old great-grandma to prom
Prom is a highly anticipated event for every student, and if they’re not eagerly anticipating it, they are certainly looking forward to it. It’s a chance for young boys and girls to enjoy a beautiful night with their dates and friends, a moment to have fun, dance, and savor the moments before their school years conclude.
For young Dakota Wollan from Watford City, N.D., prom night was not something he had been eagerly waiting for. In fact, he hadn’t even decided who to invite to this special occasion.
When the high school senior mentioned to his parents that he hadn’t picked a prom date, his father came up with an idea. Since Dakota’s great-grandma had never experienced a prom, his dad thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for her to share this experience with her grandson. Dakota, upon hearing the suggestion, welcomed it with enthusiasm, seeing it as an honor and a memorable night for both of them.
He decided to make a proper promposal to his great-grandma. “I have this old truck she gave me, a 1985 Ford that she passed down to me, and I got it running again. So, I took that truck and created a sign,” he explained to KFYR-TV.
When the 92-year-old woman saw the sign, she was taken aback, wondering why a young man would want to spend such a special night with an elderly lady.
“I was just wondering why he would want a 92-year-old going to prom with him when there are so many young girls in the school,” Madeline Miller, Wollan’s great-grandma, commented. However, she agreed to go, as Dakota made it clear that if she declined, he wouldn’t attend either.
As Miller shared with the news outlet, she had never attended a prom in her lifetime and couldn’t even recall if such events existed during her time. She explained that she had only attended high school for a year and a half due to her father’s illness, which required her to assist on the family farm. This prom night was a unique opportunity for her to experience what prom was all about.
Finally, the day arrived, and the duo was prepared to make the most of their time together. When they entered the hall, they immediately drew everyone’s attention. Both young and old couldn’t help but admire them and cheer for their heartwarming presence.
“Walking beside my great grandson, listening to this music as we walked and people clapping and hollering,” Miller fondly recalled of that memorable night.
