Students Surprise Classmates With Down Syndrome Making Them Prom King And Queen

Inclusivity. That’s the act of not leaving anybody out, regardless of their race, gender, class, sexuality, or disability. And that is something that these high school students have taught the world.

Every high school student is looking forward to prom night. Everyone wants to know who will be the Prom King and Queen.

The students of this high school know who they will be picking from their batch. They want their next Prom King and Queen to feel extra special, simply because they are special. They are Anna Anderson and Zane Wales.

Both Anna and Zane are born with Down syndrome. These two fell in love while they were just in middle school. Their young love is truly remarkable, just as special as they are. That is why the students at Jefferson Forest High School felt that these two are the perfect Prom King and Queen.

Zane and Anna had to constantly deal with the fact that they are treated differently than the average person because of their condition. Because of this, Zane and Anna’s classmates have made it their mission to ensure that the two feel at ease and welcome all the time.

And they hoped that by making them King and Queen, Zane and Anna would feel like they belonged in the community. In spite of any feelings of isolation they may have about being different from their classmates, their friends reassured them that they had an equal opportunity to participate in this much-anticipated event. That they too could be Prom King and Queen. But these two are only excited to attend prom.

Zane and Anna both didn’t see it coming. Their friends have been getting ready for this huge surprise. In fact, even their teachers knew about this plan and they joined in too. The students have been working on this for a few weeks.

Heather Hevener, one of the teachers, said, “They see these kids every day. They walk the same halls with these same kids, and they just feel like they’re part of them, so they wanted to make sure that they also really felt part of them.”

When it was confirmed that Zane and Anna had been chosen as Prom King and Queen, everyone was ecstatic. They are quite excited to finally reveal their surprise to the two of them.

During the announcement, the Prom King was revealed first.

“You’re our prom king, Zane!”

Anna was cheering for Zane along with the rest of the students who were there for the announcement. She didn’t know though that they have a surprise for her too. She couldn’t believe it when she finally heard her name called.

“And here comes the prom queen, as chosen by the whole school – Anna!”

When the announcement was made, Zane and Anna’s expressions reflected their excitement. After hearing that they are the Prom King and Queen, they both couldn’t help but beam with happiness. Even after the event, they still can’t believe it.

Zane and Anna have been crowned Prom King and Queen!

All of their classmates and even their teachers agreed that these two deserved the honor. The act of acceptance and being kind to others are two things that we can learn from these high school students. Hopefully, we can also find a way to do this to others.
