He told CBC News, “My plan was to keep them in a public place, where there’s a lot of people. I decided to make myself friendly with the man, so he would trust me. So I played my game.”

The golden opportunity presented itself when Malyk offered to buy them food at Tim Hortons. Inside the restaurant, he quickly excused himself to the restroom and called the police. The authorities arrived promptly and apprehended the kidnapper, ending the woman’s ordeal.

Malyk’s heroic intervention not only saved the woman’s life but also led to the capture of the kidnapper. For his valorous act, the police recognized him by raising $250 as a token of gratitude.
