The time has come for mom-of-four Danielle Gibson from Lebanon, Tennessee, to say goodbye to her husband before he takes his last breath. He was only 33 years old. Danielle’s husband, Tony, had suffered for months before he passed away. But before that happens, Tony was able to hear his wife’s beautiful voice for one last time.
Back in December 2017, the family was worried when Tony started experiencing short-term amnesia. Danielle shared, “He would get so baffled I would need to identify the spaces in our house.”
From there, his memory got even worse. They didn’t know for a long time what was wrong with him until doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville gave them the answer they were looking for.
In May 2018, and after a series of tests later, Tony was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Doctors explained that it’s a human version of mad cow disease. It’s a rare, degenerative brain disease caused by coming into contact with a contaminated tissue, like when you eat infected meat. Sadly, there isn’t a cure for the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and many people suffering from it die within a year.
Until the end, Danielle remained strong for Tony. She took care of him until he had to move into a retirement home. She then makes sure that she is always by his side. She wanted him to feel that she never deserted him despite all these challenges that they have to deal with.
Then three days before Tony passed away, Danielle sang to him his favorite hymn on his bedside, “Amazing Grace.”
The moment he hears his wife’s stunning voice, his eyes turn to her right away. He probably knew deep in his heart that it was her. Talking to PEOPLE, Danielle shared, “He held out the whole day up until almost midnight. He is the strongest. When he was struggling for his last breath, I was so heartbroken. I feel an empty hole. Everything reminds me of him. Every time I look at our babies I think about how they’ll never know him.”
After this touching video was shared on Facebook, she was shocked by the overwhelming support that she’s receiving. She received positive comments and hundreds also shared their blessings to her GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for their everyday needs.
On her GoFundMe page, she wrote:
“Exactly one year ago my husband started experiencing rapid memory loss. He would get so confused I would have to label the rooms in our home. We tried getting a diagnosis for months but no one could figure out what was going on. Thankfully doctors at Vanderbilt University medical center in Nashville Tennessee were able to diagnosed him with CJD (human form of mad cow disease.)”
She further wrote:
“We just had our second set of twin girls and I’m left to raise them alone. This is a terrible nightmare I cannot wake up from. Doctors gave him six months to a year at best to live but he is still fighting. He lost his job due to not being able to perform tasks and has no life insurance so I’m not sure how I will be able to afford what he needs. It is difficult enough raising two sets of twin girls with barely any income. Any donation would be a blessing. Thank you all and God bless. #CureCJD”
Even though Tony is gone and that there will always be a hole in her heart that no one will ever be able to fill, she is just content that he isn’t suffering any longer. She said, “Tony has actually constantly been so strong. He combated a damn excellent battle. Our hearts are broken however we bask in understanding this battle is over.”
CDC explains that Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare, fatal brain disorder that affects about 320 people in the United States each year. Although certain treatments can help support patients with CJD), nothing has been proven to stop its progression. The “disease is rapidly progressive and always fatal.”
