Woman Finds Dresser Drawer Left For Trash But Shocked to See Abandoned Baby Inside
It is sometimes nice to find things that you can still salvage and make use of. And sometimes, you will find unexpected things left by the previous owner. Maybe some bills and pennies or some trinkets that you can still use.
One Chicago resident was excited after seeing this old chest of drawers left for trash. She quickly checked it out but as she was pulling out the drawers what she found shocked her. It’s a small abandoned newborn baby fighting for his life!
The woman found the days-old baby boy alive on North Oak Park Avenue at about 8:13 AM, just hours before the dresser and the other trash would’ve been picked up by garbage trucks and taken to a landfill.
According to the unidentified woman, she was driving by and stopped to check out the discarded dresser. She was thinking about recycling the handles on the dresser drawers. But while she was inspecting it, she found the baby wrapped in rosary beads. The report says the baby was probably not feeling well as it seemed like he threw up a little.
She immediately called for help. The woman said she helped him little until the emergency responders arrived.
In an interview with NBC Chicago, the woman said, “I put my finger on the little foot, just to see he was moving. Every time I think about the details, it just makes me sad. So I’m just gonna focus on the miracle I was there, and that everybody showed up on time because I was shaking.”
When help arrived, the child was quickly transported to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital and thankfully, he was in good condition.
The Chicago Bureau of Detectives released a picture of the baby and asked the public for any information about the abandoned child. The residents could not believe how someone would leave a newborn baby in this state. The residents also were appalled how the baby was abandoned like this when there are Illinois’ Safe Haven laws which would have allowed a parent to drop the child at a location like a police station or hospital, as long as he or she is uninjured and not yet 30 days old.
Carlos Bracero, one of the neighbors said, “You got a hospital right here across the street, you got the fire department that’s right around the corner from here. There’s just a lot of options out there.”
And resident Candy Pittner said that she was “out of words.” “She could have even rang my doorbell — I would have taken the baby — and left. Anything but leaving it in that drawer in a chest or drawer in the heat.”
No child deserves to be treated this way. The baby is just a couple of days old, too innocent to experience the cruelty that this world brings. Still, he is lucky. He sure got the heavens looking over him.
Despite the unfortunate event, the baby was still fortunate that the woman came across him while the dresser drawers caught her attention. There is no doubt that his guardian angels touched the heart of the woman to make sure that someone would be able to find him just in time. She was at the right place, at the right time.
