X-Ray Of A Grape In Child’s Throat Is Going Viral

For your child’s safety, you will need to be extra vigilant about what they eat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has over the years maintained a list of foods that have been known for inducing a choking hazard and which should always be kept away from children that are between the ages of 1 and 4. A few of the foods include hard candies, nuts and seeds, chunks of raw vegetables, popcorns, hot dogs, and many more.
Now, there’s a new addition on the no-go list; whole grapes.

Facebook Post Shares Warning

Now, the Internet has been abuzz lately after a user on Facebook shared an X-ray photo that showed an entire grape that was being lodged inside the throat of a child. It serves as a glaring reminder of just how dangerous the fruit can be to children, and parents are now being warned to never let their little ones get close to grapes in their very best interest.

Angela Henderson, an Australian woman who works as a blogger, sociologist, psychologist and an advocate for the development of children, was the one who caused this stir by posting the X-ray image on her Facebook page. She said that the image was originally shared by a pediatrician, and he got content from the mother of the child on whom the X-ray was taken to post it online as a means of raising awareness as regards the danger of choking hazards.

As seen, the grape was lodged in the airway of a 5-year-old, and it has given an emphasis to the importance of carefully chopping foods up, even not only for pre-schoolers and toddlers alone. The child needed to undergo a surgical procedure before the grapes could be dislodged, according to the Facebook post of Henderson.
Henderson wrote with the post, “So please make sure to be vigilant and understand that it is not every child that chews their food. Some are in a rush to get to the playground, their school, etc.”

How you can keep your kids safe

Make sure to cut pieces of food into tiny pieces so that they won’t end up getting stuck in the throat of your child. It is also a proper idea to cut the food into small, triangular shapes in order to allow for air to pass through in the event that a piece of food does get stuck in the child’s airway. This is according to the clinic.

Some experts have also recommended that you should ensure that your kids are seated while they eat. This is because running with food in their mouths also increases the risk they have of choking. Inasmuch as this is easier said than done in a lot of cases, parents are implored to keep their children seated while they eat.

Non-food choking hazards

However, it is also worth noting that it is not just food materials that can cause choline hazards.

The medical school of the University of Michigan has pointed out that some non-food materials like broken parts of toys, latex balloons, button-type batteries, marker and pen caps and coins are capable of inducing choking in children.
